Cherimoya has generated significant interest in the Japanese market due to its natural properties, which is why it has been identified as one of the Peruvian products to import, said Alfonso Velasquez, CEO of Sierra Exportadora.

“The export activity will be important for the exotic fruit’s potential in the Japanese market,” he added.

He said Peru exported an estimated US$5 million in organic products to Japan in 2014.

“We have hosted trade missions from Japan that have identified Peruvian products to import including, among them, the cherimoya,” he noted.

In this sense, Sierra Exportadora has provided technical support for harvesting, classification and selection to producers in Lima.

“Furthermore, the Cherimoya Cumbe Producers Association has managed to get S/.150,000 (about US$47,528) to purchase machinery aimed at the classification, selection and transformation of the fruit into cherimoya pulp,” Velasquez said.

Cherimoya pulp’s potential destinations could be Mexico, Costa Rica and Uruguay.

It should be noted Lucumay town producers plan to export 3,000 kilograms of cherimoya per week to Canada.

Sierra Exportadora is a run-state organization attached to the Ministry of Agriculture aimed at promoting Andean products in domestic and foreign markets.
