Peruvians commemorate the 193rd anniversary of their nation’s Independence from Spain, paying a tribute to thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Peru's freedom and its democratic values, it was reported Monday.
The official ceremony is set to kick off with a Te Deum at Lima’s Cathedral celebrated by the Cardinal and Archbishop, Juan Luis Cipriani.

Among the personalities attending the traditional mass, besides the head of State and his family, will be ministers of State, high-level officials from the national police and military, civil authorities, members of the Congress' governing board and top executives of the Judicial branch and supervisory bodies.

Peru got its independence from the clutches of Spanish rule on 28th July, 1821. It was this day when the first edition of Peru's flag was unfurled by General José Francisco de San Martín.

After the religious celebration, President Humala is scheduled to give his speech to the nation during today’s Congress session.
