Peru burns over 32 tons of seized drugs in 2016

The Government of Peru will end the year with important figures in terms of fight against drug trafficking, torching more than 32 tons of seized drugs, the Interior Ministry informed on Tuesday.

This amount comes after burning more than 7.62 tons at the National Police Special Forces Department (former Dinoes) headquarters in Lima's Ate district.

According to the Ministry’s General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, 25.25 tons of drugs were destroyed as at October this year. 

The resulting number when adding today’s destroyed seizure of 7.62 tons to the aforementioned amount is more than 32 tons.

Of the total drugs burned until October 11, 9.01 tons were cocaine base. Other narcotics included cocaine base mixed with another substance (1.16 tons), cocaine hydrochloride (9.99 tons), cocaine hydrochloride mixed with another substance (419.974 kg), marijuana (4.63 tons). The rest was opiates and poppy.

On Tuesday morning, Deputy Minister for Internal Order Ruben Vargas presided over the fifth incineration of the year, which saw 7.62 tons of drugs destroyed.

This included 2.98 tons of cocaine base, 374.870 Kg of cocaine base mixed with another substance, 2.54 tons of cocaine hydrochloride, 497.980 kg of cocaine hydrochloride mixed with another substance, and 1.22 tons of marijuana. 

This number accounts for about one quarter of the total drugs seized this year, which shows the importance of Government actions in fighting illicit drug trafficking.
