Peru’s Melchor wins 5000m gold at athletics championship

Peruvian long-distance runner Inés Melchor claimed a third gold medal for Peru after winning the 5,000 meters in 15 minutes, 58.85 seconds at the 16th Ibero-American Championship in Athletics held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Melchor beat Brazilian Cruz Nonata da Silva (16:02.40), while third place was claimed by Portuguese Sara Catarina Ribeiro (16:05.45). 

On the other hand, Andy Martinez, who holds the current 100 meters national record, competed in the 200 meters, but failed to finish the race. 

This new gold medal joins those previously won at the Ibero-American Championship totaling 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze).
