Over 16 million Peruvians to mark International Workers' Day

More than 16 million workers in Peru will celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1, National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed.

Of these, 9,097,000 people (56.2%) are men and 7,100,100 (43.8%) women. 

In 2016, the number of female workers increased by 152,600 (2.2%) and the number of employed males rose by 125,300 (1.4%), compared to 2015.

According to INEI's National Household Survey (ENAHO), the number of formal workers rose to 4,539,800 (28%) and those working under informal conditions reached 11,657,300 (72%).

Nearly 50% of workers aged 25-44

By age, 48.4% (7,834,600 people) of workers are 25 to 44 years old, 33.9% (5,497,400) are aged 45 and more, and 17.7% (2,865,100) are 14 to 24 ages.

Lima, La Libertad employed highest number of workforce

In 2016, the regions with the highest number of workers were Lima (5,047,700) and la Libertad (945,900), closely followed by Piura (894,600).

42.4% of workforce has high school education

According to INEI, 42.4% (6,871,900) of the employed population has high school education, 26.1% (4,222,500) elementary education, 16.6% (2,683,100) university higher education and 14.9% (2,412,900) non-university higher education.

40% of workers employed in service sector

As for areas, 39.5% (6,400,500) of workers are employed in the service sector, 24,9% (4,011,600) in agriculture, 18,3% (2,965,000) in trade, 9,5% (1,541,700) in manufacturing and 6,2% (997,300) in construction.

34.5% of workers enrolled in pension system

In 2016, 34.5% of workers were covered by the pension system: 23% by AFP Private Pension Funds Administrators (AFP) systems, 10.4% under Laws 19990 and 20530, and 1,1% under other regimes.
