Magnitude 4.5 quake jolts Ayacucho, southern Peru

Peru has been hit again by a quake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale centered close to Coracora town in the Andes of the country's southern region.

The tremor occurred late Tuesday at 21:41 local time (02:41 GMT on Wednesday) and went unnoticed by the local population, according to Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IPG).

The epicenter was located at 28 kilometers (17.3 miles) north of Coracora town, the capital of the Parinacochas Province in the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 93.5 kilometers (58 miles).

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage or injury so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
