The Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Alejandro Werner, said the Peruvian economy will rebound in 2015 and the pace of its economic expansion is expected to accelerate in the following months.

“The recovery of the Peruvian economy will materialize over the next quarters, as well as the fiscal impulse and the currency movements that should be leading the country to economic rebound,” he indicated.

“This acceleration will probably continue in the following years, taking into account that Peru’s growth and performance have been very good in the past five years, based on very solid economic foundations,” he pointed out.

Werner continued to add that some supply factors, which were negative last year, will be reversed this year.

“Some of these factors were associated to mining production, but the country is expecting new sources of production according to the reports we have,” he said regarding the economic recovery.

Statements were made within the framework of the report “Regional Economic Outlook: Western Hemisphere:
Northern Spring, Southern Chills,” released in Santiago de Chile.

On Monday, Peru’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Alonso Segura, assured Peru’s gross domestic product (GDP) is on the rise, according to March and April estimates.

According to the government official, mining industry has made a significant investment in expansion projects and other projects approaching production, which implies a strong growth in the sector this year.

Last week, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed fishing sector grew by 17.74% in March, 2015, whereas mining and hydrocarbons expanded by 8.73% and electricity subsector by 5.68%.
