An estimated 150,000 Peruvians live in the U.S. State of Florida, which still feels the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Irma, Andean Parliament legislator Mario Zuñiga reported.
"The Peruvian Consulate in Florida must remain attentive to provide the necessary aid and support to our compatriots so that they can easily access shelter, food, communication channels, and basic services," he warned.
Zuñiga called on authorities to maintain close communication and coordination with the Peruvian Embassy in Washington and the
Miami-based Consulate in order to keep fellow nationals informed of what actions to take.
Similarly, he recommended the Peruvian mission in Florida to operate a 24-hour emergency phone service until local authorities lift the state of emergency and to report on Peruvians' situation via social networks.
"A significant number of Peruvians reside in Florida, many will become homeless, so the Peruvian State must be committed to helping them," he concluded.
It must be noted most people in coastal and low-lying areas of Miami Beach, Downtown Miami, Midtown, Coral Gables, South Miami, Miami Shores, Brickell and Key Biscayne, among others, were evacuated.
