European Union’s Ambassador to Peru, Irene Horejs, highlighted the quality of the organic bananas produced in Peru’s Northern province of Sullana and other areas of the region Piura.

She also considered its entry into the European market as “successful.”

Horejs emphasized the fact that this banana exports to the European market are increasing "due to the work conducted by over 6,000 producers" from the Chira Valley, whose products "meet all requirements to export the fruit to the European Union."

Organic banana is one of the products reaching the maximum progress in the European Union's Eco-trade program under the coordination of NGO Oikos, which executes the Probanano project, she added.

Horejs indicated the EU is willing to continue supporting the Piura region and to evaluate different projects, to be executed jointly with the regional and local government.

The Diplomatic representative stated the European Union's Eco-trade program is taking into consideration the progress achieved by the agricultural micro-zoning program.

She also said they are working together with organic producers in the taking care of water, soil and the solid waste treatment through the use of bunch covers.

European Union’s means of supporting banana production, such as: the EU-Peru Free Trade Agreement, Eco-trade program and ProBanano project, have been very useful because they have helped to improve the quality of life of over 11,000 families, said Willy Paredes, coordinator of ProBanano project, financed by the EU.

The European Union's Ambassador to Peru made the statements during the courtesy visit paid to Reynaldo Hilbck, Piura's governor.
