09:18 | Shanghai (China), Sep. 16.

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced China-based firms are interested in taking over Peru's La Oroya zinc-lead smelter.

Remarks were made in Shanghai as he addressed the media at the end of his State visit to China.

He even disclosed that some investors believe La Oroya workers might keep their positions once they take over the place.

In previous statements, Mr. Kuczynski assured Peruvian projects have been well-received by Chinese investors.

"The idea of having smelting plants rather than exporting concentrates got positive reception. As for new mines, we have held meetings with several enterprises which are quite optimistic […]. Our message was well-received," he was quoted as saying by RPP radio and TV station days ago.

Chinese company in charge of Toromocho project, for instance, has expressed deep interest in setting up an alloy smelter.

The objective is to strengthen the area as an important mining industrial center, yet following environmental conservation standards.

Likewise, the 'tren de cercanias' [neighborhood train] was presented to China's main train-building company.

Such initiative drew the attention of Asian executives who, according to the Head of State, will assess it right away.
