Around 83 percent of Peruvian citizens feel unrepresented by political parties and most of them think political leaders should be honest enough to restore confidence among political circles, according to the latest urban survey conducted by Ipsos Peru.

According to the poll, which surveyed 1,211 people from October 14-17, a mere 14 percent of respondents claimed they identify with political groups.

Nevertheless, 66 percent of those polled ruled out the possibility to join a political party if they had time; whereas, 31 percent of respondents said they would.

In addition, 35 percent argued that political parties must be strengthened for the sake of democracy, while 24 percent referred to regional political movements and another 24 percent to local movements.

About 48 percent of those surveyed believe the population would join political parties if leaders were honest, and that figure goes to 39 percent if they’ve got good proposals, 29 percent if parties’ financing were transparent; and 28 percent if they served the interests of the majority of the population.
