From different regions of the country, a group of young Peruvians will become Ambassadors of Peru's long bird diversity, thanks to an event organized by government-run Promperu, in order to promote bird-watching tourism, said Peruvian ornithologist Fernando Angulo.

So far, Angulo is the winner of the five bird-watching editions, organized by Promperu in Madre de Dios, Arequipa, Tingo María, Tumbes and Lambayeque.

186 bird species were registered in the Manu National Park, located in Madre de Dios region; 121 species in Arequipa; 132 in Tingo María; 140 in Tumbes and 111 species in Lambayeque.

"In the last Big Day edition, conducted in Lambayeque, we met the goals set by the English judge Barry Walker, which were to watch birds and  have fun. I hope we have planted in young people the seed for continuing with this activity which, in addition, enables to know different cultures and customs of Peru," he pointed out to Andina news agency.

As well, Angulo indicated Peru broke the bird-watching world record in October by registering 354 species watched in just one day, leaving Kenya behind, which led the record for almost 35 years with a total of 342 watched birds.

More than 1,800 registered species in Peru, place the country in the second country having the largest diversity in birds.
