World Games evaluation committee plans on-site visit to Lima next week

15:37 | Lima, Oct. 24.

Peruvian capital, Lima, is one three cities that have submitted an official bid for the 11th edition of The World Games 2021 and it will be the “final stop” in the evaluation process of these potential hosts.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) has assessed the bids from three potential host cities including Birmingham (USA), Lima (Peru) and Ufa (Russia).

To conclude its on-site visits, the Bid Evaluation Committee will go to Lima, Peru on the 26th of October, according to its official website.

The Bid evaluation committee has already visited the city of Ufa in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan, and Birmingham in the United States earlier this month.

The decision on whether Ufa, Birmingham, or Lima will be the successor to Wroclaw (Poland), host of the 10th edition in 2017, will be announced in January 2015.

IWGA President José Perurena López expressed satisfaction with his initial review of the bid files: "All three bid documents fulfill the high expectations that we have regarding a host city for a multi-sport event.”

IWGA Vice-President Max Bishop, heading the Bid Evaluation Committee, added: "All three cities probably have the capacity to organize good games, so the small things may well count when it comes to making a decision."

During the four-day stay in the capital city of Peru, meetings will take place with the responsible representatives from Lima to discuss the contents of the bidding document.

It should be noted the team will inspect hotels, infrastructure and of course the existing sport venues.

The World Games took place on the South American continent for the first time in Cali, Colombia 2013. This ninth edition of the multisport event boasted more than 500,000 spectators.

José Perurena estimates that the costs of staging The World Games – which use existing infrastructure – are more than compensated by the new opportunities that being host of the multi-sport event offers to a city.

The World Games showcase more than 30 sports, such as Dance Sport, Squash, Tug of War, Sumo, Beach Handball and Water Ski.

Approximately 4,500 athletes and officials from about 100 countries take part in The World Games. The athletes compete for gold medals in approximately 180 disciplines during the event.

With Wroclaw in Poland as the current Host City, the 2017 Games will be staged once again in Europe.  After Duisburg/Germany hosted the 2005 Games, the event moved to Asia and South America in 2009 and 2013 respectively.
