World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said Peru’s progress over the last 10 years has been amazing, mainly in terms of poverty and social inequality, which provides a model for other countries to imitate.

“The achievements of Peru in the last 10 years have been stunning; its growth rate has risen, poverty and social inequality levels have come down and the malnutrition rate has been reduced by half in the last eight years. This is just as it should be,” he underlined.

On the other hand, Kim said the global objective to end extreme poverty towards 2030 will not be easy and will require tough decisions and higher aspirations from countries.

However, Kim emphasized the WBG is confident that targets will be met within the frame given in spite of the major difficulties.

“I admire ho the United Nations has managed to get 170 countries to set world-changing goals. This is something unprecedented, but shows us the willingness to do so,” he noted.

Remarks were given at “Today to 2030,” an event held within the framework of the IMF/WBG Annual Meetings, which brought together a cross section of global leaders and influencers to look at the partnerships, financing, creativity and citizen action needed to end extreme poverty, boost shared prosperity and address climate change.
