World Bank hails Peru's progress in increasing universal heatlh coverage

Jim Yong Kim, president of the World Bank Group highlighted that Peru has made significant progress in increasing universal heatlh coverage which has reduced both maternal and child mortality over the last years.
"Peru has nearly doubled its coverage from 37 to 65 per cent of the population and it's led to a significant reduction in both maternal and child mortality.", said Young Kim at the Saving Every Woman, Every Child: Within Arm's Reach summit in Toronto.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on world leaders to follow Canada's example and make maternal and child health an international priority. On May 29, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Canada was investing an additional $3.5 billion towards health initiatives for mothers and young children.

Deaths from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth in Peru has dropped 65 percent since 1990, showing improved health care services for mothers and children in the Andean nation, according to a latest report from the United Nations (UN).
