Civil Society Group Transparencia (Transparency) Chairman Allan Wagner affirmed Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski took the lead in the fight against corruption by setting up the Presidential Integrity Commission and convening the State Council.
Through said commission, chaired by former Ombudsman Eduardo Vega, the government seeks to issue concrete measures aimed at fighting this scourge over a 45-day fixed deadline.
On the other hand, the State Council —composed of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Branches— aims to forge closer institutional cooperation ties in the matter.
"Thus, the fact the President has decided to take on personal leadership is highly positive. To this end, he called upon the State Council and, at the same time, he created the Presidential Integrity Commission," Ambassador Wagner told Andina news agency.
"This will not be yet another bureaucratic layer. These are two immediate measures," he added.
The diplomat also approved of Vega's efforts to strengthen mechanisms to file a report, as well as to protect those reporting corruption in order to recover citizens' trust.
Getting citizens to report corruption acts is the only way to move forward, he said.
"Thus, we need to create a culture to protect those who report acts of corruption," he insisted.
