Peru has become a global leader in the fight against climate change.
This was confirmed last year when the Lima-based UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP20) managed to pave the way towards reaching the Paris 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP21).
The Paris summit -to be held in December- aims at reaching a more ambitious, inclusive and lasting agreement, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Lima Lawrence Gumbiner affirmed.
The official added the United States government is pleased to provide support to the South American nation during the Intergovernmental Panel of Experts on Climate Change (IPCC)'s Fifth Assessment Report seminar held in Lima.
"Peru is a global leader in the fight against climate change, and today's seminar is one more example of the leadership displayed during the COP20 held last December," Gumbiner emphasized.
In this sense, he congratulated Peru "for guiding the world" towards a consensual agreement on the text approved at the time. The document is expected to serve as the model for a new global climate agreement to be reached in the French capital.
"Moreover, Peru has demonstrated its commitment to the fight against climate change by announcing a 31-percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030" as part of its national contribution, the official added.
In this sense, he reaffirmed the U.S. Government’s commitment to fight against climate change at national and international levels while underlining the his United States has lent a solid and consistent support to the IPCC since its beginning.
Lawrence Gumbiner emphasized the IPCC's revelations have "urgent implications" for global economy and for millions of people, including 30 million Peruvian citizens.
"We hope to continue the partnership with Peru and other countries for the achievement of common objectives related to climate resilience and sustainable low carbon development," he specified.
IPCC is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. It is a scientific body under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), which reviews and analyzes the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change.
