The United States relies on the Peruvian Government work to develop damage mitigation and prevention actions as a way to address El Nino effects, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols said.

“Agriculture is one of the sectors most affected by the phenomenon, but we are confident the Government of Peru is working to avoid any preventable damage,” he commented.

The Ambassador announced that experts from both countries, including scientists and specialists in different fields will meet via video conference on Tuesday.

The U.S. side will include experts at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and institutions specializing in the assessment of weather phenomena.

Mr. Nichols informed that the United States will assist the Central Government and regional governments in creating Regional Emergency Operations Centers (COER).

“Our efforts have been redoubled to establish Regional Emergency Operations Centers; we have recently opened one in Piura, and there are many others all over the country,” he said.

These efforts are complemented by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which will contribute to alert in the event of any incident as a consequence of the said weather event.
