A reception ceremony was held on Thursday morning for two U.S. Air Force Hercules C-130 aircraft that landed in Peru to provide disaster assistance to flood- and landslide-stricken communities.

The aircraft were welcomed by U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols at Callao's Air Group No. 8.

The diplomat ratified the U.S. government's readiness to support the people of Peru in facing the emergency.

The cargo planes will contribute to the transport of aid and personnel to affected regions in Peru's northern area.

"We have sent over US$1.8 million in aid, and two [U.S.] Hercules planes are heading to Chiclayo and Piura," the diplomat told reporters.

Furthermore, he noted the North American nation has also delivered sanitation kits, water filters, boats and motor pumps.

"We have U.S. helicopters working with the National Police, and we will continue to cooperate," he added.

The U.S. Hercules C-130 aircraft will remain in Peru supporting relief missions for two weeks.

The ceremony also saw the presence of Peruvian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio.
