U.S. President Barack Obama is engaged in strengthening the strategic alliance with Peru, today noted the Peruvian Ambassador to Washington, Luis Miguel Castilla, who has recently handed over his credentials to the White House.
During the ceremony, Castilla held a short meeting with the head of State of the United States of America, who ratified “the great momentum” witnessed by the Peru-U.S. bilateral relations.
“He [Barack Obama] commented on his previous gatherings with President Humala and his commitment to deepening the strategic alliance with our country,” the Peruvian Ambassador told RPP.
He said three working areas were drafted during the meeting in a bid to continue what the two parties have started and to consolidate treaties and agreements signed during the Peruvian leader’s visit over a year ago.
The first topic has to do with the security, defense, the fight against drug trafficking, the Global Entry program that simplifies the entry of frequent travelers by air into American territory, and the work with the U.S. Congress seeking to strengthen financial cooperation.
“A second area was to consolidate the benefits of the FTA. Trade has doubled, but there are a number of sanitary barriers in place that restrict entry into the market. The topic will be analyzed together with the Ministries of Agriculture, Foreign Trade and the Chancellery,” he added.
The third line of work, he added, is focused on enhancing education ties and educational exchange programs.
Mr. Castilla said that in the short time he's been in office, he was able to perceive the interest for what is happening in Peru. He also mentioned the country is seen as a reliable partner, with which a positive and constructive agenda can be built.
In addition, the diplomat highlighted the Washington’s decision to restore relations with Cuba marks a turning point in the history of not only the Habana, but also Latin America.
