U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian Nichols expressed hope that the Government of Peru will meet with the requirements for the U.S. visa waiver program that would allow Peruvian nationals to travel visa-free to his country.

He said a series of steps need to be taken towards security and fight against organized crime in air services between both countries before signing a visa waiver agreement for Peruvians.

"I am sure we can achieve that, but first we have to start negotiating these agreements quickly," he told Andina news agency.

Mr. Nichols highlighted the need to share information on serious crimes such as terrorism or drug trafficking, to apply a trusted travel program, and to use air security officers on Peru-U.S. flights.

According to Andean Parliament Vice Chairman Hildebrando Tapia, the U.S. visa approval rate for Peruvians currently stands at 80%, but needs to rise to 90% to be eligible for the waiver.

Another important requirement is the biometric passport, which is being issued already.
