Peru's Interior Ministry (Mininter) on Wednesday presented "Barrio Seguro" (Safe Neighborhood) crime and violence social prevention strategy during the 26th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).

In a release, event host United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) describes Barrio Seguro as a plan geared towards "bringing down crime, reaching out to youth and empowering women."

On behalf of Mininter, technical advisor Elohim Monard shared efforts made in Peru's northern Trujillo city, where the program has been implemented in various districts in alliance with UNODC-led Joint Programme on Human Security.

"Barrio Seguro drew on the UN Project's human security concept and adjusted it thanks to the multisectoral and comprehensive vision covering risk factors," Monard explained.

Representing the Inca country were also Peruvian Ambassador to Austria Fernando Rojas, UN Joint Human Security Programme in Peru Coordinator Julio Corcuera and a number of Supreme Judges, among other authorities.

Given its crime prevention efforts with children and youth, the strategy was well-received by the international community, it was reported.
