Unido conference in Peru brings together 30 Latinamerican industry ministers

Over 30 ministers and vice ministers of Industry from Latin America and the Caribbean region meet today in the Peruvian capital for the XV General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido), to be held December 2-6.
The meeting focusses on the importance of industrial production and trade for inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region with special reference to the contribution of innovation and technology transfer to sustainable industrial development

“There is a growing consensus that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean need to develop pro-active industrial policies on the national and regional level, and Unido is ready to support them in this,” said Unido director general, Li Yong. 

“The region has a huge potential to advance economically in the next decades. Its natural resources, population, labor force and regional market will only strengthen the power of region regarding its economic, political and cultural integration.”, he added.

Unido official said that the region requires the diversification of the productive structure, considering the new demands from sustainability, the promotion of technological progress and the reinforcement of social inclusion. 

Under the theme "Unido: Towards partnerships for a new industrial revolution for inclusive and sustainable growth", the five-day conference is expected to gather 1,000 delegates, including high-level government officials from all continents, as well as representatives of the business community, UN organizations and academia.

Also present at the General Conference will be the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, the  Director General of UNIDO, LI Yong, the Peruvian President, Ollanta Humala, the Production Minister, Gladys Triveño among other authorities.
