The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will not include Peru's Inca citadel Machu Picchu in its List of World Heritage in Danger, State-run Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC) informed Thursday.
"It was a unanimous approval; there was not even a debate nor discussion, which means UNESCO withdraws its intention to include Machu Picchu in the List of World Heritage in Danger," DDCC head Vidal Pino affirmed.
The DDCC representative currently attends the said session joined by Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park Head Fernando Astete, Culture Ministry's World Heritage Sites National Director Ana Maria Hoyle and Peru's Permanent Representative to UNESCO Ambassador Manuel Rodriguez.
"This is a major achievement for the Culture Ministry and the Peruvian State, which […] have articulated efforts to
redress the observations UNESCO made earlier on," the government official pointed out.
During the event, the World Heritage Committee will also examine the state of conservation of sites already inscribed on the list, as well as many other issues concerning the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
