Traffic accident leaves 9 killed, 38 injured in Callao, Peru

Nine people were killed and 38 more were injured in a traffic accident Tuesday in Peru's Constitutional Province of Callao, some 14 kilometers west of Lima, according to a police report.

The accident occurred nearby the Fishing Terminal of Ventanilla district when a refrigerated truck lost brakes and crashed against cars and motorcycle taxis at a bus stop, running over several people who were waiting there, police said.

The victims include a non-commissioned officer from Peru's National Police, a transportation inspector, two men and one woman and her baby. The injured were taken to local hospitals.

According to witnesses, the truck, which was carrying seafood, suddenly went off the road and crashed head on with the bus stop, Xinhua news agency reported.
