Surfers head to Peru for World Longboard Championship

Surfers from around the world will soon arrive in Peru for the inaugural International Surfing Association (ISA) World Longboard Championship next week.

The event runs from September 22-28 at the world-class pointbreak of Huanchacho in northern Peru.

According to recent reports, teams from New Zealand and Great Britain are already on their way to compete in the seven-day championship in Trujillo, Peru.

New Zealand is sending a full team of four surfers to the event. The team comprises Ant McColl (Mnt) and Zen Wallis (Piha) in the Men’s Longboard Division, Belinda Goodwin (Rag) in the Women’s Longboard Division and Jordan Griffin (Mnt) in the Under 18 Men’s Longboard Division.

Meanwhile, the Great Britain team consists of five Open surfers, one lady, one junior and one reserve, with Ben Bates, of the Jersey Longboard Riders, selected as he is the  current British No 1 Junior.

This is the first time that longboard surfing has had a separate world event. Previously the discipline has been included as part of the ISA World Surfing Games.
