Spain's cumulative direct investment in Peru amounted to US$15 billion, covering all sectors, said Alberto Almendres, head of the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Peru.

Spain is the largest investor in the Inca nation, with over 500 firms of all sizes (large, medium and small) spread across the country.

"The potential growth of investment flows will be high as long as stable macro-economic lines and a pro-business activity growth legislation remain unchanged and protect investment," Almendres told El Peruano official gazette.

The fact of being part of the Pacific Alliance —an economic bloc also composed of Chile, Colombia and Mexico— is quite interesting for the Spanish business world, as it can be used as a hub for operations in the region, he added.

"I understand President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski wants Spanish companies to continue investing in the country, which is why he offers a stable country —with clear rules— and continuous growth in exchange," he underlined.

With respect to the presidential trip, starting today, Almendres highlighted Peru and Spain aim to keep on strengthening their excellent trade ties.

"Both countries seek to draw investment and make their companies venture overseas," he emphasized.

The growth of Spanish investment flows in Peru depends on business opportunities, the clarity of business start-up regulations set by the government, as well as the transparency in State tender procedures and economic performance of both countries.

Opportunities

Almendres said the country's reconstruction process —following the floods— opens up a world of possibilities to attract Spanish investments.

He also stressed the implementation of Innovate Peru, a government-led initiative aimed at innovative companies.
