The Republic of Korea will provide some US$300,000 in humanitarian assistance to Peru, which has sustained massive damage from El Niño-triggered heavy rains and ensuing landslides in coastal areas for two weeks since early March 2017.

The contribution, including US$200,000 in cash and such relief supplies as tents and tarpaulin worth US$100,000, is expected to help victims restore stability in their lives and affected regions recover from damage.

Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn sent a letter of sympathy to President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru on March 23.

In the document he extends his condolences and sympathy to the people of Peru over the massive damage to people and property from heavy rains and landslides.

The government of South Korea, a responsible middle-power country of the international community, will strengthen its "humanitarian diplomacy" in a bid to help countries and people recover from natural disasters caused by climate change, reads a press release by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
