S. Korea to host Peru in August football friendly

07:30 | Seoul, South Korea, Jun. 26 (ANDINA).

South Korea will host Peru in a football friendly on August 14 this year, the Korea Football Association (KFA) announced Wednesday.

The time and venue for the match have not yet been determined, Yonhap news agency reported the sport's national governing body as saying.

Peru are 30th on the current FIFA world rankings, 10 spots above South Korea. The two countries have met only once in the past. In February 1971 in Lima, Peru, the home team blanked the visiting side 4-0.

Earlier this week, the KFA named former national team captain Hong Myung-bo as the new head coach for the national team.

South Korea will host the East Asian Cup, bringing together Australia, China and Japan, from July 20 to 28, for Hong's first international event.

The Peru match will be Hong's first contest against an opponent outside Asia.

South Korea has qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Peru are currently ranked seventh in the final qualifying round in South America, where only the top four countries earn automatic tickets to Brazil.

The fifth-ranked South American country will meet the winner of an Asian playoff between Uzbekistan and Jordan in an intercontinental playoff.
