On the occasion of International Women's Day, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski affirmed Peru must be a country were women and men enjoy equal opportunities.

"We must persevere in our vision of what Peru must be: an egalitarian country for women and men, as well as for all races and religions," the Head of State affirmed during the 2017 Women Order of Merit decoration ceremony.

The event recognized a total of 13 female citizens for their role in the development of the country and their commitment to eradicating discrimination.

In this sense, Peru's top official advocated for making the 21st Century the era of no discrimination, abuse, violence or insecurity.

"You, decorated ladies, are all emblematic," the statesman pointed out.

On the other hand, the leader regretted there is a long way to go concerning equality of opportunities, as evidenced by gender pay gaps.

"Salaries for women and men doing the same job are roughly similar in the public sector, but in the private sphere they are still way behind," he observed.

"This all has to change. It is a long and hard process, but we must not falter," he concluded.

The ceremony was held at Government Palace's Grand Dining Hall.

Mr. Kuczynski was joined by Vice-Presidents Martin Vizcarra and Mercedes Araoz, as well as Ministers Fernando Zavala (Prime), Marisol Perez Tello (Justice and Human Rights), Ana Maria Romero-Lozada (Women and Vulnerable Populations), Marilu Martens (Education), Salvador del Solar (Culture) and Cayetana Aljovin (Development and Social Inclusion).
