10:46 | Tacna (Tacna region), Aug. 28.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Monday presides over commemorative activities marking 88 years since Tacna region's reincorporation into Peruvian sovereignty following the Pacific War defeat against Chile.

Chile held dominion over Tacna for 46 years, period during which it unsuccessfully tried to convert Tacna-based Peruvians into Chileans. The southern region was finally returned to the Inca nation on August 28, 1929.

The Head of State first led a ceremony at 28 de Agosto Square in honor of Tacna's women, who played a key role during Chilean occupation.

At the site, the statesman participated in the laying of a wreath at the Tacna Woman's Bust and a paraliturgy conducted by Bishop Marco Cortez.

Mr. Kuczynski then joined citizens who marched along Tacna streets in the traditional Flag Parade.

Joining the top official are local civil, military and religious authorities, as well as members of the Women's Society of Tacna.

Said Society was founded 120 years ago by renowned Tacna ladies who, far from yielding to Chilean pressure, ensured that the flame of Peruvian sentiment remained lit over the decades-long occupation.

President Kuczynski will then take part in a flag raising ceremony at the city's Paseo Civico Square.
