Peruvian President Ollanta Humala today assured he is confident about the future of Peru, and noted that Peru continues to move forward towards the 2030 goals, even during the global economic slowdown.

During the event “Today to 2030,” held within the framework of the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr. Humala highlighted that throughout the years Peruvians have proved to achieve their goals if they remain united.

For instance, he continued, Peru has made more significant progress in poverty and extreme poverty reduction than its peers in the region. This also applies to water and rural electricity strides.

“I am optimistic Peru continues to move forward towards the 2030 goals, even in this slowdown scenario,” he said.

Nevertheless, he thinks the set goals for this year cannot be achieved only with economic measures but with political decisions worldwide.

According to the Head of State, this is important because it shows “we can move quicker living in democracy than in dictatorships.”

“Peru has already embarked on way to reduce poverty, inequality and chronic malnutrition, among other obstacles to development,” he added.

On the matter, the Peruvian leader assured World Bank President Jim Yong Kim is a witness, since he has worked in Peru for many years.

“I think he will be soon elected mayor of Carabayllo after completing his term as World Bank President,” he joked.

He concluded his participation by stating that one of his dreams towards 2030 would be “the eradication of hunger.”
