Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso received on Friday an formal invitation from his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff to attend the opening ceremony of the 2014 FIFA world Cup as a guest of honor.
President Rousseff’s invitation was delivered by Carlos Lazary Teixeira, Brazilian Ambassador to Peru.

“The Brazilian president has invited all his counterparts of the region, including the Peruvian leader Ollanta Humala, to the inauguration of the World Cup in Sao Paulo,”  Carlos Lazary told Andina news agency.

The ambassador pointed out that Peruvians who want to attend one of the largest sporting events in the world may travel by car through the Transoceanic highway to the city of Cuiabá, which will host four World Cup group matches: Chile-Australia, Russia-Korea, Nigeria-Bosnia and Colombia-Japan.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014 with 32 nations competing including six South-American countries.

Peru's last World Cup appearance was in that of Spain 1982, a tournament in which Peru was viewed as a favorite. They were eliminated last in their group, with 2 ties and 1 loss.
