Peruvian President Ollanta Humala attends Solemn Mass and Te Deum celebrated by Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of Lima, on the occasion of Peru’s Independence Day celebrations.

The religious ceremony takes place at the Basilica Cathedral in Lima.

Wearing the presidential sash, the Head of State left the Government Palace accompanied by his wife, First Lady Nadine Heredia.

State ministers, senior government officials, diplomats, as well as high-ranking military and police officers also attend the religious ceremony.

The Te Deum is an early Christian hymn of praise. The title is taken from its opening Latin words, rendered literally as "Thee, O God, we praise."

The hymn remains in regular use in the Catholic Church in the Office of Readings found in the Liturgy of the Hours, and in thanksgiving to God for a special blessing.
