Thanks to farming frontier expansion and actions taken by the current administration, national agriculture has become the country's second-largest economic engine after mining, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala affirmed on Friday.

Likewise, Mr. Humala highlighted his administration boosted irrigation projects across coastal, highland and rainforest regions.

"Today, we are able to assure agriculture has become the country's second largest economic engine, ousting fishery, tourism and other sectors [...]," the top official expressed.

"It has experienced a 3% expansion, unlike other industries," he stressed.

Over the last five-year period, agriculture was handled as a State policy. In this sense, over S/11.00 billion (about US$3.30 billion) was invested in the country's regions.

According to the Peruvian leader, his regime does not only leave an agricultural policy, but also a social one.

The Head of State made remarks on Farmer's Day celebrated in northern Piura region.
