Pope Francis selects Peruvian cardinal as economic adviser

Pope Francis has appointed Peruvian cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani to serve as member of the newly-created Vatican Council for the Economy.

Cipriani was selected by Pope Francis to be one of the fifteen members to the New Council for the Economy which comprises eight cardinals or bishops representing different parts of the world, and seven lay experts of different nationalities with strong professional financial experience.

In addition to Cipriani, other prelates include Norberto Rivera of Mexico, Reinhard Marx of Germany, Daniel DiNardo of the United States, Wilfrid Napier of South Africa, Jean Pierre Ricard of France, John Tong Hon of Hong Kong, and Agostino Vallini of Italy.

The lay members of the council are Joseph F.X. Zahra, former director of the Central Bank of Malta, Jean Baptiste de Franssu of France, John F. Kyle of the United States, George Yeo, the former Finance Minister of Singapore, Jochen Messemer of Germany, Spanish economist Enrique Llano Cueto, and Francesco Vermiglio of the University of Mesina in Sicily.

According to Peruthisweek.com, representatives of the Vatican said that the council members come from a wide variety of geographical backgrounds in order to better reflect the reality of the modern Church.

The Council for the Economy, headed by Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia, was created by Pope Francis on Feb. 24 in order to provide oversight, evaluation and advice on Vatican economic affairs.
