Pope Francis has sent a contribution of US$100,000 to Peru as an expression of love and sympathy with the Andean nation. Aid will be given to the Peruvian Bishops Conference and disbursed through Caritas Peru.

According to the Peruvian Bishops Conference, this is a gesture of parental concern intended to ease the pain of thousands of brothers and sisters who are affected by the onslaughts of nature.

Previously, on Sunday, the Argentine pontiff expressed his sympathy for the victims and assured his closeness to "the beloved people of Peru" after reciting the Angelus prayer in the Vatican City.

The Catholic Church's commitment at this difficult time is being expressed through the service of parish sites within the affected dioceses and through a national fundraising effort led by the Conference, which involves the participation of all Catholics across Peru.

"The Peruvian Bishops Conference, on behalf of all Peruvians, mainly the affected people, thanks Pope Francis for his prayers and gesture of effective closeness towards those in need of support and solidarity," reads a press release issued by the Conference on Friday.
