Foreign arrivals in Peru will increase 8% in the first quarter of the year, over the same period in 2017, Peruvian Domestic and Foreign Tour Operators Association (Apotur Peru) projected on Thursday.

"Incoming tourism will see an 8% growth during the first three months of the year, compared to the same period in 2017, mainly due to the arrival of tourists through Jorge Chavez International Airport," Apotur Head Enrique Quiñones told Andina news agency.

Two important events will take place this month: The Dakar Rally and Pope Francis' visit to Peru. In fact, more than a million foreign visitors are expected to come to see the Supreme Pontiff.

According to figures released by Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur), Peru received a total of 947,892 foreigners in the first quarter of 2017, while those who arrived at Lima's airport —during the same period— totaled 449,851.

According to Mincetur, the number of travelers who entered Peru between January and October last year amounted to 3,306,542, with the aforementioned airport welcoming 1,809,966 during this period.

As stated by Quiñones, tourists entering via Jorge Chavez International Airport bring a greater economic impact to the country, bearing in mind the average daily spending per visitor is higher than that of those who arrive through land borders.
