The head of the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), Alfredo Murgueytio, noted Piura region warehouses are well stocked with different logistics material and necessary tools to tackle an emergency such as El Niño in northern Peru.

Murgueytio told Andina news agency that such material taken by the Naval vessel BAP TACNA, during the last practice drill, will remain in the region to meet any eventuality.

“Everything will be stored in Piura, because we have storage facilities there, Air Group N° 7 has provided us with some hangars where we are going to place the aid, but our warehouse in Piura is completely stocked, so we need to acquire new ones,” he pointed out.

Indeci’s head stressed they are also looking for new warehouses and informed that a well-known shopping center in the city has arranged a 1,800 square meter area to store the humanitarian supplies brought by land.

According to Murgueytio, the 600-ton help sent at the BAP Tacna ship will be stored at Indeci warehouses. Supplies include important material such as 100,000 corrugated iron sheets and large cans to fill with drinking water.

“We have also brought tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels, picks, crowbars and other heavy material to be used in case of emergency,” he stated when commenting on the practice drills for El Niño climate phenomenon held in different regions of the country.

He addressed the population living in vulnerable areas and told them they should know where the safe areas and evacuation zones are. He also encouraged them to participate in scheduled prevention exercises.
