The year 2015 will be the one of the Peruvian fishing sector's recovery due to the disappearance of the effects posed by the “El Niño” phenomenon, affirmed The Head of the Ministry of Production (Produce), Piero Ghezzi.

The climatic phenomenon harshly affected the domestic fishing activity in 2014.

“We still have to wait for the results from the Peruvian Institute of Sea (Imarpe), but to a large extent, ‘El Niño’ has dissappeared, I think. Thus, I believe this year a great recovery of the sector should take place,” Ghezzi expressed.

“Last year, we suffered due to the very adverse climatic conditions, which affected the [fishing] sector,” the Minister reminded while exiting the IV Aquaculture and Fishing Exporters Lunch-Forum.

Concerning versions suggesting the new arrival of Kelvin waves, which lead to the heating of the sea, Ghezzi rated those as “small stuff”.

He also required "keeping the equanimity" on the case.

Regarding the opening of the 2015's first fishing season, the Minister indicated his portfolio will wait for the Imarpe results, to set the proper dates to let actitivies officially kick off.

In this sense, the season in the Southern zone of the country is to begin between April and May, since an “important biomass increase” has been proven, he indicated.
