Peruvian surfer Miguel Tudela was yesterday’s standout performer at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior competition after he obtained a near-perfect 9.75 en route to an excellent two-wave total of 17.75

"Today was a very long and exhausting day," Tudela said Wednesday. "Surfing a heat here in Chicama is equal to surfing 10 at any other beach. I’m really happy that I was able to advance with such high scores. I got those two good ones early on, so that got me more relaxed during the heat.

Tudela drew attention this year by reaching the Final of Pro Junior competitions at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California and at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France.

As local rider, he suggested picking waves carefully in Chicama, because if surfers don’t catch a good one, they are going to lose a lot of energy paddling against the current.

“A lot of the foreign surfers aren’t used to waves like this, so I think a Peruvian is going to win the event," he noted.

It should be pointed out, however, that eight out of the 10 heats completed on Wednesday were won by Brazilian surfers, including Renan Perez, Gabriel Andre and Madson Costa.

Alongside Tudela, fellow countryman Joaquin Del Castillo was the only other Peruvian to advance in competition.

"This is my first time here to Chicama and the waves are incredible, but very hard to compete in," said Costa. "Today they were a little smaller than yesterday, so you have to choose wisely or else you lose a lot of time.

Costa acknowledged the conditions there were very physically demanding because competitors have to race up the beach to get back up to the point. He added, “Everybody is surfing really well and I hope to make it to the Finals."
