The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) described Peruvian-born Christopher Olivares and Gerald Tavara as football wizards just after Peru claimed gold at the Boys’ Youth Olympic Football Tournament Nanjing 2014.

“Peruvian pair Christopher Olivares and Gerald Tavara caught the eye with some close ball control and mazy runs,” noted the international governing body of association football.

Sporting Cristal midfielder Gerald Távara stood out for his great technique and ability, especially in dead-ball situations, where Peru had a profusion of set-piece specialists to call on.

Gerald Tavara’s goal in the opening win over Iceland came from a free-kick, a sublime effort that put the young Peruvians 2-0 ahead. This set-piece specialist stole the show.

Another midfielder classified as ‘wizard’ by FIFA was Christofer Olivares -who plays for Peru’s Esther Grande de Bentín. He played four games and scored a goal in the 3-1 victory over Honduras.

In its article on how South Americans retain title, the FIFA also mentions Peru exploited their long-range shooting strengths, most notably with captain Fernando Pacheco’s looping effort from distance that clinched victory in the finale.

Likewise, the highest soccer body highlighted Peruvian boys’ performance, as they demonstrated some fancy footwork throughout the competition.
