Three Peruvian archaeological sites -Machu Picchu (Cusco), Chan Chan (La Libertad) and Caral (Lima)- have been named among the top eight lost cities in the world, Peru's export and tourism promotion board Promperu has announced.

Tourism-Review.com, an international portal providing news for the travel trade professionals worldwide, recently introduced eight of the ancient world's most fascinating cities.

According to the website, throughout the ages, inquisitive travelers have always been fascinated by the mystery attached to the lost cities of past civilizations.

Tourism-Review.com labeled Machu Picchu as "arguably, the world's most famous lost city" and said this ancient Inca city remained largely unknown to the outside world until its discovery in 1911.

The website also described Caral as "undoubtedly one of the most ancient lost cities across America" and said a "unique characteristic of this city is that it featured a large central public area that was surrounded by platforms or stone circles."

Chan Chan, meanwhile, was mentioned as "the biggest city in pre-Columbian America" and "comprised several walled citadels which served as ceremonial rooms, temples and burial chambers."

Other sites included among the top 8 were: Tikal, Guatemala; Taxila, Pakistan; Skara Brae, Orkney; Pompeii, Italy; and Great Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe.
