Peruvian Prosecutor Luz del Carmen Ibañez Carranza was elected Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in elections held on December 4 in New York.

Ms. Ibañez was chosen in the first round of voting and will serve a nine-year term.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is the first time a Peruvian expert joins such prestigious court.

On the other hand, it continued, the election acknowledges Peru's commitment to the rule of law, international law, and fight against impunity.

Likewise, it recognizes Dr. Ibañez's high professional qualifications.

The election took place at the Sixteenth Session of the ICC's Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute in New York on December 4-14, 2017.


Based in The Hague (The Netherlands), the International Criminal Court is the world's first permanent international criminal court that tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
