Peruvian president leaves for nine-day Middle East tour

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala departed last night for a nine-day diplomatic tour of three Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, Palestine and Qatar.

His trip, scheduled to last until February 22, aims to strengthen bilateral relations and promote trade and investment links.

Humala will first visit Israel for separate meetings with Israeli President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Speaker of the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament), Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.

In addition, he will hold talks with local business leaders before visiting the Israel Aerospace Industries facilities.

The Peruvian leader will then head to Palestina, where he is scheduled to meet privately with his counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.

Finally, he will arrive in Qatar to hold talks with the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and with Ahmad Al-Sayed, chief executive of the Qatar Investment Authority.
