Peru exported its national grape-based spirit, pisco, to a total of 42 international markets in 2013, according to data from the Peruvian Exporters' Association (Adex).

Adex said Saturday that last year's exports generated US$ 5.4 million in revenues, which is a 2 percent drop compared to the year before.

"Last year we had to deal with a slow rotation of our flagship drink in the United States (US$ 2.8 million). Shipments to that country were down 14 percent at the end of 2013," Adex said in a statement.

The association explained that the recovery in the US economy is slow, affecting demand for some products.

In 2013, the United States was the top export market for Peruvian pisco with US$ 2.8 million in sales, followed by Chile with $1.2 million and Germany with $276.382.

Other destination markets were Spain, Colombia, UK, Japan, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Sweden, Panama, Latvia, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Costa Rica and the Netherlands, among others.

Pisco is the main ingredient in the national cocktail Pisco Sour, which actually has its very own “day” the first Saturday in February.
