Peruvian Labor Minister Nancy Laos joined her counterparts from across the region at the recent XVIII Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML) in Medellin, Colombia.

Held under the auspices of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Nov. 11-12 event brought together the ministries of labor of 34 countries and representatives from 80 trade unions.

On the first day of the meeting, the Peruvian minister held bilateral talks with United States Deputy Secretary of Labor Seth D. Harris and with International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Guy Ryder.

She also met with Canada's Minister of Labor and Minister of Status of Women, Kellie Leitch, and with Ecuador's Minister of Labor Relations, Jose Francisco Vacas.

On the second day, Minister Laos participated in a plenary session entitled "Employment and equity. Employment as a keystone in the quest for equality and development," where she highlighted the critical role of employment in improving the wellbeing of the population, raising productivity levels and fostering social cohesion.

Laos took the opportunity to outline her ministry's efforts to promote decent employment with consistent emphasis on social inclusion and gender equality.
