Peruvians consume an average of 24.4 kg of Pollo a la Brasa –Peruvian rotisserie style baked chicken– each year, and the capital city Lima is the largest consumer of such traditional dish, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed.
According to the bureau of statistics, in 2014, Lima’s yearly average consumption was 26.6 kg, while homes in the rest of the country and rural areas consumed 22.5 kg and 15.7 kg, respectively.
INEI’s survey revealed that the restaurant subsector’s production increased by 3.46% in May this year. Sales at Peruvian pollerias –restaurants specializing in the dish– grew 2.6% in the same period, compared to May 2014.
Likewise, the national production of poultry jumped 10.48% in May 2015 from the same period last year, due to increased demand of chicken.
As of July 15th, the commercialization of chicken in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao was 29 million kg, that is, 10 million live chickens.
In 2014, 36% of the total poultry population at the national level was observed in Lima, followed by La Libertad with 16.6%, among the main producers.
It should be noted Peru commemorates Pollo a la Brasa Day every third Sunday of July. This year celebration falls on July 19th.
