More than 600,000 low-income families living along Peru’s southern regions are expected to benefit from the planned construction of the massive-natural gas pipeline in the mid-term.
The Humala administration awarded on Monday, June 30th, the concession to build and operate the Southern Peruvian Gas Pipeline (GSP) with an investment of US$ 4 billion, the country Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM) has reported.

“The GSP project marks the beginning of a new development pole in southern Peru as well as the improvement of the country’s energy security,” said Eleodor Mayorga, MEM’s head.

He added, “We have successfully concluded this bidding within the agreed deadlines and we will be taking a step towards the implementation of one the largest projects ever carried out in the Andean nation".

Addressing the press following the tendering process for the construction of the major gas pipeline, the minister stressed this landmark initiative will allow to sustain with low-cost and clean energy supply the development process of the country.

In this regard, the top MEM official pointed out the GSP will provide environmental, economic, and waste management benefits in the southern regions.

"After implementing the pipeline grid, it will be used in homes, businesses, vehicles and industrial use, thus reducing costs to consumers and fostering competitiveness and a booming economic expansion," Mayorga told Andina news agency.

The reserves of Camisea fields, he said, will arrive this time to the south, thus allowing markets to sustain their growth, which is the only viable way to reduce poverty in our country.
