Peruvian handicraft exports reached US$29.6 million in the first seven-month period of the year.

Handicrafts are one of the lines of business, which invests the most in productivity and innovation with the aim of turning its supply into a more competitive one, Peru's Exporters Association (Adex) pointed out.

Between January and July, the U.S. became the main market for handicraft products. Sales to the North American country totaled US$13.3 million. These accounted for 45% of international shipments; followed by those to New Zealand, worth US$3.1 million (11%).

Other target markets were Germany, United Kingdom, Chile, Australia, Italy, Japan, Bolivia, Argentina, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Ecuador and Spain.

The business guild remarked that the handicraft sector is characterized by a confsiderable number of enterprises, which aim at international markets and, thus, supply recognized global buyers.

Among most demanded handicrafts were “fur and alpaca items" (US$2.8 million), "knitted and cotton-made cardigans" (US$1.4 million), "knitted and cotton-made sweaters," “wool knotted or fine fiber carpets," "statuettes and ceramic ornaments," among others.

In order to promote products featuring exclusive designs and to create spaces for establishing business relationships, Adex's Manufacture management will hold the "Corporate gifts" showroom and business roundtable on September 9.

The event will strengthen commercial bonds between Lima’s most representative enterprises and those from the exporting sector, which will exhibit products such as gold articles, silverware, decor products and gifts, among others.
